Area J died. Area J was known as “Martyrs’ Square”, “Borj”, “Place des Canons”. Although Area J did not have buildings, it is considered a dead area since 1983 because it no longer functioned as a square. Area J constituted the centre of the city where people congregated around the central public space where the Martyrs’ Square statue by Italian sculptor Marino Mazzacurrati still stands. Previously, the statue “Les Pleureuses” or “The Weeping Women” by Joseph Hoayek was placed there in 1930 but was removed following its vandalism. The square’s perimeter was highlighted by surrounding palm trees.
Area J leaves a hole of 38 years along with the underground foundations of “Le Petit Serail” a historic administrative Ottoman building.
