Of Majid Arslan and Weygand streets, Area U had a slow death, passing away in phases starting in 1983. Area U was a main centre of market activities containing multiple souks intertwining at each corner such as “Souk Ayass”, “Souk El Tawile”, “Souk Arwan”, “Souk Jamil”, “Souk El Franj”, “Souk Arwad”, “Souk Bustros” and “Souk Sayyour”. Each souk was specialized in selling items. Marketgoers were greeted with “Bérket el Antabli” a famous lemonade stand located deep within the souks.
Area U was survived by a partial hole for 21 years, and replaced by an open-air luxury mall. One zone within Area U had been a hole since 38 years.
